John Landis for the directors list?
Seamus
- Monday, April 04, 2005 at 02:02:26 (EDT)
Pave,
I completely agree. I personally can stand the Coen Brothers, at least more
than the Farrelys. But I really can't stand Mel Brooks, he's to dry and I could
easily see him switching spots with the Zuckers. Charlie Kaufman's spot could
go to Harold Ramis.
Bryan,
Niel Simon's a playwright isn't he?
James L. Brooks is mostly television and his movies aren't anything that really
stands out. The Simpsons, Mary Tyler Moore, and Taxi are the only things on
his resume that are really good.
Woody Allen should be #1, he has around 30 great movies under his belt, he
writes them by himself, they're all smart, and they are all different, and funny in
their own seperate ways. Sleeper for example was more reliant on physical
comedy while love and death was more about the dialouge, and let's not forget
What's Up Tiger Lily?.
Kevin Smith could probally move up, I personally think he's better than the
Farrelys who just rely on stupidity and cheap laughs, wheras Kevin Smith is
smart and original and is like Woody Allen for stoners. Yeah he beliddles
himself to dick and fart jokes, but for every one fart joke theres two or three
intellecual jokes.
Will Lew ever update this list, or at least hand the responsibilite to someone?

bryan,
charlie kaufman is my favorite new screenwriter but do you really
think he should be top 10 in history with only 4 (maybe 5, i cant
remember) movies? i dont want to get in a huge arguement becuase i
honestly dont know who to replace him with. i cant name many
screenwriters. but it just seems that having someone with only a very
small career like that in the top 10 doesnt show much to the history
of the subject.
as for your arguement about the Python guys. the same thing goes for
the Coen brothers. very many people do not like their films. their is
just as many people who cant stand them as people who cant stand
Python. but there arent near as many people who love them as people
who love Python. keep the top 3 the same as they are. but in my
opinion, Python could be 4 pretty easily.

i love monty pyhton..but lets be serious..their blend of humor isnt
very acessesible to everybody(you cant expect everybody to think that
famous K*NI*GIT joke is funny)..in fact some people i know think they
are horrible..i made chaplin number one because his humor(though a bit
dated)still endears him to millions of people all around the world..he
is also very influencial(even today).

"Coming to America" starring Eddy Murphy should be added to the list
and "Jumping Jack Flash" starring Whoppy Goldberg.
Oscar and Mars Attacks were really bad movies they dont desverve a
place on this list.
Multiplicity is an OK movie .Its place should be given to much more
better films which are not even mentioned on this list.
and Old School hasnt even been added yet.

a few things about the writers/directors list. I think you really
picked out the right names, but I can't really agree with the order. As
I once said I think the number one spot can easily go to Monty Python.
First regarding their work together: 45 or 46 episodes of flying
circus, Holy Grail, Life of Brian, Meaning of Life and other minor
productions. But there is also individual work by all of them. Just to
pick out a few: Fawlty Towers; A fish called Wanda; Fierce creatures;
Time Bandits; The Rutles; Brazil; Jabberwocky; Fear and loatthing in
Las Vegas. These are just a few. The Monty Python humour is very funny.
Every scene is packed with good laughs.
Please don't get me wrong about Charlie Chaplin. I really love him and
I know that he started the whole thing about comedies. He deserves big
credit for this, but not necessairily on this list. I'd put him at
number five or six. His films are just not THAT funny, but sometimes
even tragic. But anyway, that is in the end very subjective.
I would revise it like this:
1.Monty Python
2.Woody Allen
3.Coen Brothers
4.Mel Brooks
5.Charlie Chaplin
6.Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker
But after all I think the top six is very debatable and could be in any
order.
BTW who wrote and directed the Marx Brothers films?

well let me explain a few things..for starters these lists are not all
made by one person..this list is made by lew who also made this
site..however the worst movies list was made by me..so that might
explain a few things..this site has about 30 editors..and they dont
always share the same approach to listmaking.

Home Alone should definitely stay and the Home Alone 2 should be
added along with Old School, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and Office
Space. The one movie that should also be added is Midnight Run, which
is Robert DeNiro's first comedic act and a hilarious one, along with
Charles Grodin and Mac from Beverly Hills Cop.

Should remove:encino man, oscar, mars attacks, mouse hunt, sister
act, bill and teds excellent adventure, Bean, the toy, babys day out
top secret, scary movie, up in smoke, multiplicity
should move down: waynes world, the birdcage, arthur, tootsie, whats
up doc
should add:monkey business, to be or not to be, being there, kind
hearts and coronets, horse feathers, annie hall, good morning
vietnam, the thin man, beverly hills cop,mr deeds goes to town, its a
gift
this list is a decent start but it needs a major overhaul

It's a good list, but a few things. Why is Mars Attacks on here, but
it's also on your worst movies list? Make up your mind. I also agree
that Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Office Space should definitely be
on here. Take off Home Alone, Encino Man, Scary Movie, and Bean-I
think the Bean character is hilarious but the movie was really
disappointing.

Monty Python should be at least the top 5. That movie has spawned
everyone in the comedy business to do slapstick. History of the World
Part 1 should be moved up.

The list virtually ignores the comedies made in the Ealing Studios in
london. For example
- "Kind Hearts and Coronets" Peter Sims playing nine members of the same
family
- "The Lady Killers" the original not the remake.
- "Genevieve"
- "Carlton-Browne of the FO"

Kizak,
I couldnt agree more about Scary Movie. I didnt even smile during the
entire movie, in fact it was so predictable, uninteresting and
painstaking that I couldnt sit through it. You could find funnier
things to watch by channel surfing on any given hour of your life. I
am not sure how that script was ever turned into a movie. How the
movie ended up on this list baffles me.

Seamus: Exactly. Thats why I liked Curb Your Enthusiasm so much. It reminded me of Seinfeld minus the laugh track.
Troy
- Sunday, March 13, 2005 at 02:01:57 (EST)
Troy,
I think that Arrested Development is probally the best show of the 00's and Seinfeld being the obvious 90's, unless you want to include Simpsons in that, then the nod would go to them. But back on track, Seinfeld had the laugh track and that always ruined it for me, the only show i can think of other than Arrested was Freaks and Geeks (a show I just discovered. If you haven't seen it you should). Even great shows like All in The Family did, well actually it was filmed in front of a live studio audience, but you get the idea. It just kind of ruins the scene when you have a serious conversation and someone cracks a joke, and the laugh track comes on. I don't want to laugh, you just laughed for me thanks. ranting i know, but I just love the show so much.
Seamus
- Sunday, March 13, 2005 at 01:56:24 (EST)
Seamus: That exactly what I love so much about it. No laugh track! No bullshit psuedo-irony. Real characters, and character development. Not just one dimensional people, and actualy good plot.
Troy
- Sunday, March 13, 2005 at 00:26:25 (EST)
I'd like an explanation as to why Chaplin isn't on this list, if anyone knows.
Charles
- Saturday, March 12, 2005 at 21:39:03 (EST)
Troy,
It's new yes, but it's also incredibly funny. It doesn't rely on sitcom perfect timing either. It has a great cast and is the first show in years to not use a laugh track. The story is original, and the writing is witty and can rival such modern comedies as curb your enthusiasm.
overall what do you think of the additions, and the switching of the cosby show and mash?
Seamus
- Saturday, March 12, 2005 at 15:28:17 (EST)
Seamus: I'm a little suprised at how high you have Arrested Development. I didnt think that show was going to get any credit for years.

actualy tom goes to the mayor is quite funny, weird but funny, the only crappy show on cartoon network is super milk chan,a kewpie doll to anybody who can tell me what the hell that show is about, but other than that, pretty much every show on cartoon network rules, the venture bros is pretty damn funny, though it will obviously be a turn off to some people who just wont get it,the show is a spoof of the old johnny quest cartoons of the 60s,most of the charcters are loosly based on charcters from johnny quest,Dr. venture for example is a caricature of Dr. benton quest, and brock samson is a incarnation of race bannon.

Thanks. Yeah I decided to not include shows like SNL and In Living Color. I also decided against talk shows.
A change to my list,
46 should be the Wonder Years.

Seamus-
Excellent TV List. I particularly like how you have Rocko's Modern Life on there, I always thought that was a Nickelodeon obscurity viewed only by eleven year olds and me. I developed a recent taste for Futurama as well, though it's production by Matt Groening becomes a bit too obvious sometimes, complete with the occasional joke recycled from old Simpsons. No SNL (early years obviously)?Larry Sanders was great while it lasted.
Possibly best of all, no Friends! God I hate that show....

Why do most Americans miss out on our British Sitcoms?
Only Fawlty Towers gets a place on your lists and it makes me wonder if you have seen most of what Britain has to offer. You had The Office which went down well but others which tower above it are left out.
Seinfeld is without doubt the greatest Comedy show outside of Britain though.

I will concede and raise Family Guy.
chris, All Family Guy is, is references to old movies and spoofs. It's also a clone of The Simpsons.
Homer= Fat and dumb
Peter= Fat and Dumber
Marge= Sterotypical Housewife
Lois= Stereotypical Housewife.
Theres also whole episodes lifted from The Simpsons.
I'm not saying the Simpsons are entirely original though, Homer Simpson is practically a cartoon version of Archie Bunker.

Favorite Comedy TV Shows:
1. The Simpsons
2. Family Guy
3. Seinfeld
4. South Park
5. Curb Your Enthusiasm
6. Arrested Development
7. Aqua Teen Hunger Force
For the most part I find sitcoms to be terrible. Seinfeld and Arrested Development's originality sets them apart. Also, to Seamus on the Family Guy issue...yes, Simpsons has more of a human element, but it was corny early on in the show. REAL corny. I laugh more at Family Guy..and how is it not original. Some of the stuff in that show, you just think to yourself how does someone come up with that...it's brilliant stuff. Plot-wise, it doesn't match up to Simpsons, but it doesn't have to because it's so funny.

I just dont get why "The Jerk" isnt any higher! Its probably one of the funniest movies of all-time, and its rated in the 40s! It deserves top 20, AT LEAST! I mean, who can't crack up laughin when Steve Martin finally gets the beat, and realizes he will always stay white, and never turn black! Also, how bout the first line: "I was born a poor black child" - Steve Martin. Hah!

To Conky:
Again, who made you the authority on what constitutes as funny? If there were just one sense of humor, there would only be one type of comedy. However, since people are different you have many different type of humor. There are the cerebral humors (Seinfeld), the profane and abrasive humor (Coming to America), obvious humor (The Simpsons), and that beloved slapstick humor (The Naked Gun). Obviously different people enjoy different comedies. So what makes your opinion so superior? This is coming from the guy that had The Family Guy at #4 on the funniest list? #4? But that something that you feel stronly enough about to give it that generous ranking. I'm not criticizing though unlike you.
What is with you and your condescending attitude? Does it make you feel good about yourself by trying to belittle someone else and their opinions? Is your self-esteem that low? I have a novel idea for you. How about you try debating and discussing things on this forum without downing someone else. Because if you like I could really do the same to you. By the way, where is your list? Please amuse me.

To Bryan:
Thank you. I see we have AT LEAST ONE other mature intelligent ADULT that can converse and not criticize or attack.
To Conky:
I am going to say this for the 1,000,000th time. NOT EVERYONE HAS THE SAME SENSE OF HUMOR. The shows that you find funny, I probably dont. Such as your Trailer Park Boys, I wasnt amused. However, I DIDNT say it was a terrible show or criticize you or question your personal taste as you have a habit of doing. What makes you the final word on whats funny anyhow? Did you create comedy? Do you make the criteria of what constitutes as funny? Please grow up or stop posting all of your ridiculous and random rambling.
Nonetheless, since you wanted an idea of what I thought was funny, here is a list of movies that I enjoyed when I saw them. This is in NO PARTICULAR order.
1. COMING TO AMERICA- EDDIE MURPHY

Hey Critic, i'd like to see your top 30 funniest movies list. Seriously, I would like to see what movies you find funny. I sincerely hope you can do better than the guy who actually had the nerve to place 'Coneheads' above 'The Life of Brian'??

I love it... the critic is trying to show off his superior intellect by pointing out spelling mistakes. Classic.
You know what is funny? A guy who makes a statement that any show not aired on a US network must be crap...better yet, the same guy who has 'Designing Women' and 'Charles in Charge' in his list claims that he enjoys 'cerebral' humour.
The bottom line is that anyone who ranks Golden Girls in their top 10 should be told just how ridiculous they are. If you can't take it, that's your problem.
Guys like you shouldn't be encouraged to provide their input if it has no validity, and they certainly shouldn't go by the tag name of 'The Critic'.

Canada - Tuesday, February 15, 2005 at 19:33:15 (EST)
Seamus: I think you focus a little too much on originality than the actual content of the show. I can understand how I Love Lucy (a show I personally dislike and rarely laugh during) would be top 3. It was the first real sitcom, and the first show ever with reruns. It deserves a high spot for that, and I accept that. What I think is wrong is that after the top 10-20, you need to branch away from that. Go for whats funny and stays funny. The list is pretty good, but I still geel your criteria is slightly skewed.
Troy

Because Family Guy isn't original, Beavis and Buthead is at least more than family guy. Chapelle's Show will be lowered.

Seamus: Dont you think Chapelles Show could drop down/off the list? Sure its funny, but Comedy Central plays the same two episodes about 10 times a week. Evenutally, you cant take it anymore. Plus, with suburban kids running around everwhere yelling out "I'm Rick James Bitch!" and "WHAT? YEAH!" at every opportunity, the show loses taste very quickly. If you heard each joke once, it would be fine, but the way it is marketed and overplayed, it just ruins the show completely. On another topic, how is Beavis and Butthead above Family Guy now? I know you dont care for Family Guy, but that just doesnt make sense.

Seamus: I would say no. You cant really compare them to other shows. Plus, you would have to specify the host of each one, and then it would just become your personal preference. I hate Jay Leno, and dont particularly like Letterman either. Conan, I like. I think Jon Stewart is genuis. I'm sure there are people who would say the exact opposite.

Seamus
- Saturday, February 12, 2005 at 22:56:23 (EST)
Seamus: American Dad had its moments, but it isnt going to last. What is so original about Futurama? The characters are shallow and underdeveloped, and nothing new at all. The jokes are repetative and get stale and old really fast. Watch 5 episodes in a row and by the end you will feel ready to slip into a coma. Try the same with Family Guy. The characters are nothing special, but thats not the focus of the show. They are basically transitions from one joke to another. It has re-watch value, but Futurama doesnt. It doesnt rely on the random celebrity cameos that Futurama does. I uses more wit and high end humor than Futurama, which relies on sitcom timing and sorry excuses for irony. Its the lowest form of humor than kicking a mime wearing womens clothing in the crotch. Hehe, nevermind, thats kinda funny when you picture it.
Troy
- Saturday, February 12, 2005 at 22:52:37 (EST)
Troy,
Futurama is repetitive, but it has the originality factor going for it. Family Guy is just The Simpsons minus any real human emotion. Did you catch American Dad? That shows that Seth Macfarlane isn't creative at all.

- Saturday, February 12, 2005 at 13:17:59 (EST)
Seamus: Nah, Adventures of Pete And Pete should not be included. To answer your other question, I would much sooner drop Futurama than Aqua Teen or Family Guy. Talk about running the same joke into the ground, it gets so repetative. I was suprised that you even listed it. I am completely in favor of dropping Futurama to make room for Sealab, but Venture Bros. is pushing it a little bit.

TO CONKY:
I'm the idiot? You have The Family Guy as the FOURTH funniest show? #4? Give me a break. You of all people have the audacity to try to ban someone from making a list. Like I said previously, not everyone has the SAME sense of humor. For you to criticize my list and say that it isnt legitimate is indicative of the type of person you are. Maybe that's why the more cerebral humor, which is in the shows that I listed, escapes you most of the time. When people have a weak or lacking argument, they begin to ATTACK their opponent. Such as you have done. Maybe its YOU who should be reading more and spend less time gratifying yourself while watching the Trailer Park Boys. Which, by the way, I caught an episode of on BBC, and I was not amused....at all. However, unlike you, I am not going to say that it is a terrible show and it doesnt deserve a fanbase. I'm saying that I dont enjoy it. All of the shows on my lists are there for a reason. Whether it be for their comedic genius, or for their influence, something of which you probably have a difficult time comprehending. By the way, GENIUS, learn how to spell. Its S-e-i-n-f-e-l-d!

This is to THE CRITIC.
Plain and simple...you're an idiot. I guess if a show isn't played in the U.S (which Trailer Park Boys is on BBC America by the way...)then it must not be funny. It's arrogant/ignorant guys like you who should probably be reading more books and fewer reruns of Charles in Charge.
Maybe you should ask your parents for more allowance money so you can afford more than basic cable. Until then you just keep watching your favourite comedies like...Perfect Strangers (brutal), the Golden Girls (gay) and Designing Women (no comment necessary)
Your all-star list has the Golden Girls ahead of All in the Family.
You;re an idiot and should be banned from making any lists.
The funniest shows on tv are :(and this list is for all the semi-intelligent people who view these)
1. Sienfeld
2. Simpsons
3. Curb Your Enthusiasm
4. Family Guy
CONKY
Canada - Friday, February 11, 2005 at 00:33:29 (EST)
Bryan,
I'll lower perfect strangers. But Family Guy isn't all it's cracked up to be. They take one joke, run it into the ground, then do it again in hopes it'll be funny. It's all flashbacks. Lets break down a family guy episode. Joke, Joke, Joke, Tight Spot, Joke, Resolution, Joke, Joke. Thats opposed to, The Simpsons, where it does the jokes and then actually leaves you with something at the end. Think of all The Simpsons episodes were at the end you are moved. The one with Lisa's subsitute, or where Lisa became really good at hockey. They were different, they didn't try to be straight comedy. They wanted you too leave feeling good and entertained, it's like Pretty in Pink, your sad at the end, but you know it ended well and you feel good. Thats my defense for The Simpsons against Seinfeld as well.
Critic,
I could not have said that better myself.
All,
Should I include Talk Shows like Johnny Carson and Conan O' Brien?
Mr. Crowley,
NO!

The Simpsons were really good during the 1992-1997 period of time, but now the episodes are just plain stupid. Simpsons is on the verge of fading away.
Seinfeld, there's one of the greatest comedy shows ever. If there was a list for 100 greatest comedies, the only one that would come close to it's greatness would probably be M*A*S*H, but Seinfled would beat it.
1. Seinfeld
2. M*A*S*H
3. Fawlty Towers
4. The Simpsons
5. Cheers
6. Married... With Children
7. Home Improvement
8. Becker
9. Just Shoot Me
10. The Adventures of Lano and Woodley
This is list is just for fun. If I'd put some thought into it, I'd come up with way better comedy shows. And the Adventures of Lano and Woodley is just a classic. In Australia, these 2 guys are pertty famous. They may not be anywhere else. Yet, the show's just there for fun.

JAKE:
I totally agree with you that Seinfeld is comic genius. Line for line, in my opinion, it IS the funniest show ever televised. But let's face it, not everyone has the same sense of humor, obviously. I think the reason that All in the Family, I Love Lucy, and the Simpsons are ranked ahead of Seinfeld is due to their influence on television. Characters like Archie Bunker, Lucy Ricardo, and Homer Simpson are innovative and groundbreaking, thus catapulting their respective sitcoms to the top of most people's lists. I due respect what those shows have done for television. However, I dont agree that they are the BEST shows, with influence aside. I would have to say The Cosby Show and Seinfeld are #1 and #2 for me.

First of all I am the guy that had 'Charles in Charge' in my top 50 shows. It was a popular show at the height of its success in the 80s. Check the ratings. Secondly, you are from Canada. A lot of shows that they show in Canada are never seen in America. The same thing applies to all of those British shows. Most of them never get shown in America. I've never seen Trailer Park Boys. It obviously ISNT THAT FUNNY, or it would have made its way to the states like the rest of the more popular and funny foreign shows.

Troy,
Yes, you are pushing it, don't worry though, the show has earned it's spot. Family Guy characters aren't as great as everyone thinks, they're just the simpsons, but dumber. Peter Griffin, is Homer Simpson, minus half the brain cells, and real human emotions, a smaller vocabulary, a more irritating laugh, and without the catch phrases, and fatter. Stewie and Brian are the only original characters on that show, at least in the family, Stewie, I'd consider. I guess I'll just take off Randal since it isn't a movie list. Make 15 Ed Norton from the Honeymooners.
I'm also considering only counting shows that lasted at least 2 seasons, but then The Honeymooners wouldn't place (39 episodes).
Angry,

Maybe I am overlooking it, but if not, where is COMING TO AMERICA? We are talking one of the funniest movies of the last 30 years. It is funny from beginning to end with the brilliant Eddie Murphy at his comedic best. Not only does Eddie provide us with more than enough characters himself, but the cast of supporting characters is great as well. Arsenio Hall, Samuel L. Jackson, James Earl Jones, Louie Anderson. COMING TO AMERICA maybe the most quoted movie amongst EVERYONE that I know. It has everything you need in a comedy. It has a simple yet good story, unbelievably funny characters, and enough funny lines to quote forever. How this movie could have been overlooked is beyond me.

Best Comedy performances
My Top 10 (My own personal choice)
1. Alec Guinness (Kind Hearts and Coronets)
2. Peter Sellers (Dr Strangelove)
3. Gene Wilder (The Producers)
4. Zero Mostel (The Producers)
5. Groucho Marx (Duck Soup)
6. Steve Martin (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels)
7. Marty Feldman (Young Frankenstein)
8. Peter Sellers (The Pink Panther)
9. John Cleese (Life of Brian)
10. Alec Guinness (The Ladykillers)
With Python its hard because everyone is at their best.
Alec Guinness just pips Sellers but those 2 performances are the greatest in cinema history for comedy and the most demanding.

another good list idea would be best comedic performances. peter sellers in dr. strangelove would probably be number 1. if you think it would be a good list post your favorite performances.

Only Fools and Horses should have ended when it was on a high. The later episodes were a poor imitation to the former show.
Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Sealab 2021 (Series1&;2 only) are worthy of being on any Top 50 comedy TV List.
To anyone in Britain, who has never seen Aqua Teen or Sealab - You are seriously missing out on 2 of the greatest shows ever. I envy you because you will be able to see them for the first time and have that feeling of "What the Hell was that?" while having one of the biggest grins on your face ever. Comedy gold but dont watch the new Sealab shows only watch Seasons 1 & 2 to appreciate it.
