today's "country" is not country. there are a few songs that are
decent, but they're few and far between. the classics can't be
touched. i know that radio doesn't play very much of it anymore, but
none of today's country compares.

I'm sorry but Hurt is not a better song then I Walk the Line. In
fact, why is I Walk the Line so freakin low? Move it up, it should
be in the top ten w/o a doubt.

Brett,

There are a few songs on here that I accidentally copied and pasted
and ended up here twice. If you see them the lower placement is the
one to go by since I moved them all down.

Er, did you notice that you have "How Do I Live" by Trisha Yearwood on
here TWICE? (#61 and #88) I'm not sure it should even be on there
once, let alone twice. "She's In Love With The Boy" (which is lower)
is a better record anyway.

I don't see "For The Good Times" by Ray Price on there. It should be.
Same with "Oh Lonesome Me" by Don Gibson, "Rudolph The Red-Nosed
Reindeer" by Gene Autry (probably both the biggest selling and most-
covered song in country history), and "The Race Is On" by George
Jones. And how do you have absolutely nothing by Eddy Arnold? (I'd
suggest "You Don't Know Me" and "Make The World Go Away" for starters.)

When You Say Nothing at All is Keith Whitley's song, but it's not
even his best. I'm Over You and I'm No Stranger to the Rain are at
least as good, maybe better.

Most of the songs on this list look like they were shosen by ten year
old kids who listen to country when they pass by the station when
changing the radio from pop-rock to rap. Singers like Deana Carter,
Tim McGraw, and Shania Twain should be reserved for a list of
THE 100 LARGEST FRAUDS or maybe WASTES OF AIRTIME. They aren't
country and they aren't musicians.

(Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, Dixie Chicks) and move them over to
your greatest pop songs of all time list.

FYI: There is a grammatical error on number sixty; the title of the
song reads, "Your Still the One," by Shania Twain. The song title
should read, "You're Still the One." Otherwise, I feel the composers
of this list are quite savvy about country music!

"I saw the light" Hank Williams.

That song is great, and it is deeply touching. When country is great, it
sounds like a recording from the deserts loneliness and wide open lands.

When it's bad it's maybe the most plasticy music style. Here I'm thinking
about Dolly Parton, Shanie Twains, Bonnie Raitt, Faith Hill (not meant to be
chauvanistic, but those just came to mind) and that kind of thing.

Live Like You Were Dying by Tim McGraw should be added to the 100 Greatest
Country Music Songs. That songs being a good meaning out to people. Tim McGraw
is my favorite singer and this song has made him one of the biggest country
singers out there! I think that he should be appricated and put him on the
count down! Thank you!

I'm sad to see no Fats Domino in the top 100. I guess i'm old but blueberry
hill and blue monday ruled the jukebox in the 50's along with hank's Cheatin
heart. Also Hank thompson's " I didn't know god made honky tonk angles" should
be on the list as it was before Kitty Wells very successful answer to it.

Chris F.,

I am glad to see "The Dance" so high on this list. I am not a particularly big
fan of country music, but this song (and most of Brooks' work, IMO) actually
ranks quite high with me overall (not just country, but all music.)

Also could you consider "Ghost Riders in the Sky" please? It is just an awesome
song =)

Jett posted...

Some songs to consider:

Jambalaya - Hank Williams Sr.
There Stands The Glass - Webb Pierce
Cold Cold Heart - Hank Williams Sr.
El Paso - Marty Robbins
Anytime - Eddy Arnold
Lovesick Blues - Hank Williams Sr.
Slow Poke - Pee Wee King
King Of The Road - Roger Miller
Six Days On The Road - Dave Dudley
I Like Beer - Tom T. Hall
Take This Job And Shove It - Johnny Paycheck
Is Anybody Going To San Antone? - Charley Pride
Behind Closed Doors - Charlie Rich
Young Love - Sonny James
Crazy Arms - Ray Price

I agree with all of the above. Please get "Tennessee Waltz" off of there. That
is in no way a country record. It's just a pop record that was so huge that it
crossed over on to the country chart, similar to "White Christmas" by Bing
Crosby making the R & B chart.

Bruce
- Tuesday, November 02, 2004 at 02:11:15 (EST)
No way "Ring Of Fire" should be higher than "I Walk The Line" or "Folsom Prison
Blues." Those two records were anthems that cash had to perform practically
every night for his entire life. "Ring Of Fire" was a song done for a movie.

You need a lot more Hank Williams here. "Kaw-Liga" is huge, along with "You Win
Again," "I Can't Help It," and especially "Jamabalaya."

Please remove "I Honestly Love You" from the list as soon as possible. That's
about as country as "Smoke On The Water" by Deep Purple.

Bruce
- Monday, November 01, 2004 at 21:28:46 (EST)
Interseting that "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" was not even the hit side of the
single when it was out. The flip side, "My Busket's Got A Hole In It" was the
hit side.

I'm A Man Of Constant Sorrow - Stanley Brothers

Cold Cold Heart - Hank Williams Sr.
Divorce Me C.O.D. - Merle Travis
El Paso - Marty Robbins
Singing The Blues - Marty Robbins
Anytime - Eddy Arnold
Lovesick Blues - Hank Williams Sr.
Slow Poke - Pee Wee King
A Satisfied Mind - Porter Wagoner
Battle Of New Orleans - Johnny Horton
Pick Me Up On Your Way Down - Charlie Walker
Dang Me - Roger Miller
King Of The Road - Roger Miller
Six Days On The Road - Dave Dudley
I Like Beer - Tom T. Hall
Rednecks, White Socks, And Blue Ribbon Beer - Johnny Russell
Take This Job And Shove It - Johnny Paycheck
Is Anybody Going To San Antone? - Charley Pride
Behind Closed Doors - Charlie Rich
Young Love - Sonny James

Crazy Arms - Ray Price
I Believe In You - Don Williams
Bouquet Of Roses - Eddy Arnold
Texarkana Baby - Eddy Arnold
Me And Paul - Willie Nelson

Some songs that are quite more deserving than most on your list, for you to
consider.

Kenny Rogers highest song at no.62? That can't be right, especially when the Dixie Chicks have 2 songs higher. The 70's and 80's must not count, cause he ruled the late 70's and early 80's.

Billy,

Yes and No , the name "Soggy Bottom Boys" was used instead of the few artists who actually performed it for two reason , one being space and another being that it became identfiable to the reader. Clooney had nothing to do with the song , besides lip-synching it in the movie.

Here are my suggestions: "On The Wings of A Snow White Dove" by the great (and overlooked even on this site remarkably) Ferlin Husky is THE greatest country song of all time for my money, in my estimation beating Hank. I'll bet there are a couple of folks that would agree too. Johnny Cash's "I Walk The Line" is number 2. "Country Roads" should be in the top ten or at least top five. And "Linda On My Mind" by Conway? Where is it? Good Gosh, everybody melts when they hear that damn thing! Who is making this list? Get real!!!Emmylou should be on with "Born To Run", as that was her massive country hit. This is fun!

"The Fox" , while a great song , does not compare to their others which have a much better chance of being here , i.e. "Reasons Why" and "The Lighthouse's Tale".

The Fox, off nickel creek, is reeeaaallly a great song. It's funny, very inspired, catchy etc. should be at least a top 80 song.

Dima ,

Which "Last Kiss" are you speaking of? There are a number of songs with that title , or do you mean "This Kiss" by Faith Hill? or Pearl Jam's "Last Kiss which is not a country song.

zxxxz,
Smith's song just did not make the cut , although it was one of the few to hang on longest. I expected if Street was to be mentioned at all that it would be his "Bad , Bad Leroy Brown" , although I enjoy Smokey Mountain Memories" as well. However I dont think it beats number 100 "Golden Ring" , nor does "Long Black Veil" although I could be swayed on the latter more easily.

Chris F.
- Tuesday, August 31, 2004 at 00:32:40 (EDT)
I'm not sure if Mel Street should be on your lists. It would be a shame to ignore his "Smokey Mountain Memories" covered I believe by Milsap. Sadly he cut his own life short and his body of work isn't as large as it would have been. What a wonderful voice though.

Chris, I appreciate your effort in compiling these lists. Not an easy task to be sure.

No serious list would fail to include "Long Black Veil" - Lefty Frizzell (Elected into the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 1982). Just as Sammi Smith's song below it is a much covered song.

As I've mentioned on the other two pages, I'm not much into Country music in general.... but I can definitely appreciate its beauty in many instances...

Leon Payne's "I Love You Because" is one of the most simple yet beautiful love songs I've ever heard, without a doubt. Perhaps you should consider it for the list too, Chris, I think it's a truly great one.

I see four Hank Williams classics up there, and glad to see "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" at the very top..... what a song...
I also like soulman Al Green's cover of it very much, by the way.

Must also say Ray Charles's "You Don't Know Me" is one of the most special songs ever to me... I see Ray is already represented up there with "I Can't Stop Loving You", but I'd say "You Don't Know Me" is equally deserving.

Lots of tunes I don't recognize, though, I should definitely give them a listen.
And just want to let you know I appreciate the hard work you've done to compile all these lists, Chris.

"Achy Breaky Heart" is a catchy tune , and can only score high in lasting popularity. It did not create much influence , had little impact (other than sales) , Its not held on a golden pedastal for its lyrics or sound , and its certainly not original. So it will remain of the ,list , and there are many other great songs that would come long before it.

Chris F:

You freakin' rock. I was gonna do the country lists, but you've done an excellent job. Keep up the good work.
